The accepted papers will be published in a special supplement to the Australian Journal of Indigenous Education in early 2007 and will be available to view and download from this website.
Non-refereed papers that were included in the Conference Program will also be made available on the website at that time.

WELCOME

The QUT Oodgeroo Unit would like to welcome educators, researchers and community practitioners from around Australia and the world to the 2006 (Re)Contesting Indigenous Knowledge and Indigenous Studies Conference. Indigenous and non-Indigenous people are engaged in the recontestation of Indigenous knowledges and knowledge systems within and across many cultural interfaces. Cultural interfaces include those spaces where Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous peoples create and act upon meaning (or misunderstanding) and can be considered as a series of ongoing, cultural dialogues (Nakata, 2002).

Professor Martin Nakata

Professor Martin Nakata
Martin Nakata is Professor and Director of Indigenous academic programs at Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, University of Technology Sydney. He is the first Torres Strait Islander to receive a PhD from an Australian university and his current research work is in the curriculum development areas and online pedagogies with a particular focus on Indigenous learners.

Professor Aileen Moreton-Robinson

Professor Aileen Moreton-Robinson
Aileen Moreton-Robinson is a Geonpul woman from Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island), Quandamooka First Nation (Moreton Bay) in Queensland, Australia.  Previous to her appointment as Professor of Indigenous Studies at Queensland University of Technology she was an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian Studies Centre, University of Queensland. Prior to this appointment she taught Indigenous studies at Griffith University in Brisbane and Women’s Studies at Flinders University in Adelaide.  She is author of Talkin’ Up to the White Woman: Indigenous Women and Feminism, University of Queensland Press which was short-listed for the New South Wales Premier Literary Awards and the W.E. H Stanner Award.

Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith
Linda Tuhiwai Smith is a Professor of Education at the University of Auckland and Joint Director of Nga Pae o te Maramatanga The National Institute for Research Excellence in Maori Development and Advancement.She is from two Maori iwi (Tribes) Ngati Porou and Ngati Awa. Linda is well-known for her writings on indigenous education and indigenous research. Her book “Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous peoples” is a widely used text. More recently she has published in the Handbook of Qualitative Research 3rd Edition edited by Denzin and Lincoln.
